The Family in the Bible
Here we try to present family settings described in the Bible.
01
Relationship with Parents
Christ emphasized the need to have respect and love within the family, both by offspring towards parents as well as …
“And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.’ But you say, ‘If any one tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is given to God, he need not honor his father.’ So, for the sake of your tradition, you have made void the word of God. You hypocrites!” (St. Matthew 15:3-7)
02
Relationship with siblings
Need for siblings to get along peacefully and respect each other’s vulnerabilities.
“Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.” (St. Luke 15:31-32)
03
Relationship with spouse
The husband and wife relationship is a unique one, unlike any other.
“Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.” (St. Matthew 19:4-6)
04
Relationship with children
Having children is a blessing that cannot be taken for granted. It comes with spiritual responsibilities that last a lifetime and beyond.
“Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (St. Matthew 7:9-11)
